Iris bulbs are perennial flowers that quickly grow all around you garden due to their horizontal stems, which are also known as rhizomes. These flowers, produce roots that are fleshy in nature, and are like the roots of an iris, hence they are called Iris bulbs.
Iris bulbs are available in about 300 varities and have received their name from a Greek word for rainbow. So do you want to learn how to plant Iris bulbs ?

Before we start talking about planting Iris bulbs, lets have a look at the pre-requisites that are involved. Firstly, you will need to examine the soil. Soil that is well drained and has small amounts of alkaline are good for growing Iris bulbs. If you believe that your soil is acidic, you can add the sufficient amount of dolomite lime to make it alkaline.

The best way to grow Iris bulbs is to grow them in divisions. Not only will this decrease confusion, this will also add to the looks of your garden. Leave about 2 feet between the plants, and make sure that the hole is 2 - 3 inches deep, which is big enough for the roots of the iris to fit in.

Iris bulbs require a lot of sunlight, hence it would be advisable for you to plant your iris in a spot where it will receive atleast 5 - 6 hours of sunlight every day. Partial shade will do as well, as long as it dosent last all day. Since Iris rhizomes are prone to rotting, ensure that the soil is well drained but still beholds a small amount of water.

The most important thing to make note of is the soil, which has to be neutral at all times. The pH content of your soil has to be about 6.5 - 6.8 at all times for best results. A good way to start would be to add a quarter ounce of bone meal or other low nitrogen fertilizers to the soil prior to planting the Iris. The best time for Iris bulbs to grow is immediately after the summer is over, but before the frost and freezing sets in.

Some "Don'ts" for growing Iris bulbs:

1) Never digg more than 3  - 4 inches deep. Always digg a hole thats around 1.5 - 2.0 times the size of the bulb.
2) Never flood the soil with extra water
3) While planting the Iris bulbs, make sure there are no empty spaces. Never leave out air pockets !!!!
4) Never assume, that the soil is neutral and the pH level is correct. You can test the pH level from the site mentioned below.
